Abstract Cultivar IPR 106 resulted from a spontaneous hybridization between “Icatu IAC 925” and an unknow dwarf plant. It is a dwarf cultivar with high rusticity, late ripening cycle, large grains, excellent cup quality and resistance to some populations of the nematodes Meloidogyne paranaensis and M. incognita found in the state of Paraná.

Abstract The aim of this study was to identify resistance to bacterial halo blight in Arabica coffee lines carrying Coffea racemosa genes. Eighteen Arabica coffee lines derivative from the genotype C1195-5-6-2, and the cultivars IAPAR 59 and IPR 99 were evaluated for resistance to bacterial halo blight in two trials carried out in field conditions, in Londrina, PR, Brazil. The cultivars Mundo Novo IAC 376-4 and Catuaí Vermelho IAC 81 were included as susceptible controls. Ten lines and the cultivar IAPAR 59 showed resistance to bacterial halo blight. The cultivar IPR 99 presented intermediate reaction, and the controls were very susceptible. This is the first study to show that lines derivative from the genotype C1195-5-6-2, which has C. racemosa genes, could be a source of resistance to bacterial halo blight in coffee breeding programs.

Abstract ‘IPR 102’ is a coffee cultivar derivative from a cross between “Catuaí” and “Icatu”. ‘IPR 102’ is a dwarf cultivar (medium size) with high rusticity, late ripening cycle, and it is resistant to bacterial halo blight and partial resistant to coffee leaf rust.

Abstract ‘IPR 100’ was derived from a crossing between “Catuaí” and a hybrid (“Catuaí” x BA-10 coffee). ‘IPR 100’ is a medium size dwarf cultivar with high rusticity, with late ripening cycle, and with resistance to Meloidogyne paranaensis and to some M. incognita populations.

RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a reação ao nematoide Meloidogyne paranaensis em progênies de café arábica derivadas do Icatu. O experimento foi conduzido em telado, no Instituto Agronômico do Paraná (IAPAR), em Londrina, Paraná, Brasil. Mudas com três a quatro pares de folhas foram inoculadas com 5.000 ovos e juvenis de segundo estádio (J2) de Meloidogyne paranaensis. Foram avaliadas quatro progênies F4 de HN 87609 derivadas de ‘Icatu H4782-7-925’. Como padrões de suscetibilidade e resistência, foram utilizados, respectivamente, Coffea arabica cv. Catuaí Vermelho IAC 81 e C. arabica cv. IPR 100. O experimento foi instalado em blocos casualizados com 14 repetições e uma planta por parcela. As avaliações foram efetuadas 120 dias após a inoculação. Foram avaliados o número de ovos e J2 por gramas de raiz (Nematoides∙g–1) e o fator de reprodução (FR). Para classificar os níveis de resistência das progênies, foi utilizado o índice de suscetibilidade do hospedeiro (ISH). De acordo com Nematoides∙g–1, as progênies IAPAR 12232 e IAPAR 12231 não diferiram estatisticamente do padrão resistente ‘IPR 100’. Todas as progênies F4 de HN 87609 foram altamente resistentes pelo ISH e apresentaram 100% das plantas classificadas como altamente resistentes ou resistentes. Portanto, a resistência a M. paranaensis está condição homozigótica.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the reaction of Arabica coffee progenies derived from Icatu to Meloidogyne paranaensis. The experiment was conducted under screenhouse conditions at Instituto Agronômico do Paraná (IAPAR) in Londrina, Paraná State, Brazil. Seedlings with three to four pairs of leaves were inoculated with 5,000 M. paranaensis eggs and second-stage juveniles (J2). Four F4 progenies of HN 87609 derived from Icatu H4782-7-925 were evaluated. C. arabica cv. Catuaí Vermelho IAC 81 and C. arabica cv. IPR 100 were susceptible and resistant checks, respectively. The experiment was conducted in a randomized blocks design with 14 replications of one plant per plot. Assessments were performed 120 days after inoculation. The number of eggs and second-stage juveniles (J2) per gram of roots (Nematodes∙g–1) and reproduction factor (RF) were evaluated. Host susceptibility index (HSI) was used to classify the resistance levels of coffees. In relation to Nematodes∙g–1, IAPAR 12232 and IAPAR 12231 progenies were not significantly different from the resistant check IPR 100. All F4 progenies of HN 87609 were classified as highly resistant by HSI and presented 100% of plants classified as highly resistant or resistant. Therefore, these progenies are homozygously resistant to Meloidogyne paranaensis.

RESUMOAtualmente, encontram-se quatorze cultivares de maracujazeiro-amarelo no Registro Nacional de Cultivares do Ministério da Agricultura. É de grande importância o aprimoramento de trabalhos de melhoramento genético nessa cultura, para favorecer a disponibilização de novas cultivares adaptadas às regiões produtoras. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a produção e as características qualitativas dos frutos de treze híbridos de maracujazeiro-amarelo cultivados no norte do Paraná. As avaliações foram realizadas durante dois ciclos de produção da cultura, de abril a julho de 2009 e de janeiro a julho de 2010, com coletas semanais dos frutos maduros. A produção foi determinada por meio da pesagem dos frutos colhidos e do número de frutos por planta. Para as características qualitativas, foram avaliados: massa, comprimento, diâmetro, relação entre comprimento e diâmetro dos frutos, espessura da casca, rendimento de polpa, teor de sólidos solúveis totais (SST), acidez total titulável (ATT ) e relação SST/ATT . Os híbridos ‘66’ e ‘65’ apresentaram, respectivamente, maior produção e maior número de frutos no acumulado das duas safras. Os frutos do híbrido ‘72’ destacaram-se no atendimento das características desejáveis de qualidade para o consumo in natura, enquanto o híbrido ‘69’ apresentou caracteristicas importantes para a indústria de suco.

ABSTRACTNowadays there are fourteen cultivars of yellow passion fruit on the National Register of Cultivars of the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture. The improvement of plant breeding in this crop is of great importance to provide new cultivars adapted to the producing regions. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the production and fruit quality of thirteen hybrids of yellow passion fruit plants grown in the northern Paraná. The evaluations were performed during two cycles of crop production from April to July 2009 and from January to July 2010 with weekly harvests of ripe fruits. The production was determined by weighing the total output and counting the number of fruits per plant. The evaluated quality characteristics of the fruits were: weight, length, diameter, diameter/length ratio, thickness, pulp yield, total soluble solids (TSS), total titratable acidity (TTA ) and TSS/TTA ratio. Hybrids ‘66’ and ‘65’ respectively showed the highest yield and greatest number of fruits in the accumulated of the two crops. The fruits of the hybrid ‘72’ stood out on desirable quality characteristics for fresh consumption, while the hybrid ‘69’ showed important features for the juice industry.

O objetivo desse estudo foi selecionar progênies de café produtivas e com resistência à ferrugem em dois locais do Estado do Paraná (Brasil). Os experimentos de campo foram instalados no delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso nos município de Itaguajé e Congonhinhas. Foram avaliadas as características produção, vigor vegetativo e resistência à ferrugem em nove progênies de café arábica e em três cultivares padrões. Vários genótipos derivados do "Sarchimor" e do "Catucaí" apresentaram plantas suscetíveis. Três cafeeiros do germoplasma Sarchimor e uma progênie "F6 de Catuaí x (Catuaí x cafeeiro da série BA-10)" foram selecionados para avanço de geração e têm potencial para se tornarem novas cultivares, pois apresentaram produção maior que 'IAPAR 59' e 'Tupi IAC 1669-33' e muitas plantas apresentaram resistência completa à ferrugem.

The aim of this study was to select high-yielding coffee progenies with resistance to coffee leaf rust for the State of Paraná (Brazil). Field experiments in a randomized block design were carried out in Itaguajé and Congonhinhas. Yield, vegetative vigor and rust resistance of nine progenies of Arabic coffee and three check cultivars were evaluated. Many genotypes derived from "Sarchimor" and "Catucaí" were susceptible. Three coffee genotypes of Sarchimor germplasm and the F6 generation of genotype "Catuaí x (Catuaí x BA-10 coffee)" were selected to advance generations and are promising to become new cultivars for being higher-yielding than 'IAPAR 59' and 'Tupi IAC 1669-33' and having a large number of plants with complete rust resistance.

'IPR 107' foi derivada do cruzamento entre 'IAPAR 59' e 'Mundo Novo IAC 376-4'. 'IPR 107' é uma planta compacta de tamanho médio com maturação dos frutos mediano e com resistência à ferrugem. Essa cultivar apresenta qualidade de bebida superior e alta produtividade em várias regiões cafeeiras.

'IPR 107' was derived from a cross between 'IAPAR 59' and 'Mundo Novo IAC 376-4'. 'IPR 107' is a dwarf medium size plantwith medium precocity in ripening and with complete resistance to rust races in this time. This cultivar presents superior quality and high yield in many coffee regions.

'IPR 99' foi derivada do cruzamento entre "Villa Sarchi 971/10" e "Hibrido de Timor 832/2". 'IPR 99' é uma cultivar de porte baixo, resistente à mancha anular, parcialmente resistente à ferrugem, com maturação dos frutos semi-tardia. Em condições de campo, 'IPR 99' apresenta resistência parcial à necrose e mumificação de frutos jovens. Possui qualidade de bebida especial e alta produtividade nas regiões cafeeiras mais frias e mais quentes do Paraná.

'IPR 99' was derived from a cross between "Villa Sarchi 971/10" and "Hibrido de Timor 832/2". It is a dwarf cultivar, resistant to coffee ringspot virus, partially resistant to leaf rust with semi-late ripening. 'IPR 99' presents partial resistance to necrosis and mummification of young fruits on field conditions. It presents special cup quality and high yield in lower and higher temperature coffee regions in Paraná State.

A 'IPR 103' foi derivada do cruzamento entre "Catuaí" e "Icatu". 'IPR 103' é uma cultivar de porte compacto médio com alta rusticidade, parcialmente resistente à ferrugem e com maturação dos frutos tardia. Essa cultivar é mais adaptada para regiões quentes e de solos pobres. Em condições de campo, apresenta resistência parcial à necrose e mumificação de frutos jovens.

'IPR 103' was derived from a cross between "Catuaí" and "Icatu". 'IPR 103' is a medium size dwarf cultivar with high rusticity, partially resistant to coffee leaf rust with late ripening. This cultivar is more adapted to hot regions and poor soils. It presents partial resistance to necrosis and mummification of young fruits on field conditions.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the resistance to rust in coffee cultivars developed by research institutes of Brazil in Paraná state. Resistance to the local leaf rust races was assessed in high disease intensity field conditions at Londrina and Congonhinhas in 2009 and 2010.The cultivars were developed by the EPAMIG/UFV, IAPAR, IAC and MAPA/Procafé. The resistant standard 'IAPAR 59' and the susceptible standards Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144' and 'Bourbon Amarelo' were used. A randomized block design with three replications and plots with 10 plants was used. A scale from 1 to 5 based on the rust intensity was used to evaluate the resistance. The Catiguá MG 1, Catiguá MG 2, IAPAR 59, IPR 98, IPR 104, Palma II, Paraíso H-419-10-6-2-5-1, Paraíso H-419-10-6-2-10-1, Paraíso H-419-10-6-2-12-1, Pau Brasil MG 1 and Sacramento MG 1 cultivars presented complete resistance to rust at Londrina and Congonhinhas. The cultivars derived from the Catucaí germplasm were susceptible or showed different levels of partial resistance. Partial resistance to the rust was observed in several coffees derived from "Hibrido de Timor". 'Acauã' and 'Obatã IAC 1669-20' presented complete resistance at Londrina, but at Congonhinhas, they were partially resistant, indicating that different rust races have occurred at these two locations.

A pequena disponibilidade de genótipos melhorados de maracujazeiro-amarelo contribui para a baixa produtividade da cultura no Brasil. Materiais genéticos devem ser desenvolvidos visando ao incremento da produtividade e da qualidade dos frutos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a produção e as características qualitativas dos frutos de 36 híbridos de maracujazeiro-amarelo cultivados no norte do Paraná. As avaliações dos híbridos foram realizadas durante dois ciclos de produção da cultura, de abril a julho de 2007 e de janeiro a julho de 2008, com coletas semanais dos frutos maduros. A produção foi determinada a partir da produção total e do número de frutos por planta. Para as características qualitativas, foram avaliadas: massa, comprimento, diâmetro e relação entre comprimento e diâmetro dos frutos, além de espessura da casca, rendimento de polpa, teor de sólidos solúveis totais (SST), acidez total titulável (ATT) e relação SST/ATT. A produção, em quilos de fruta por planta, situou-se entre 20 e 40 no primeiro ciclo e 54 a 96 no segundo, o que representa uma produtividade de 30 a 53 ton ha-1 para o conjunto das duas safras. Os híbridos '40' e '43'apresentam, respectivamente, maior produção e maior número de frutos no primeiro ciclo de produção Os frutos do híbrido '36' destacaram-se no atendimento das caracteristicas desejáveis de qualidade para o consumo in natura, enquanto os híbridos '43' e '60' apresentaram caracteristicas importantes para a indústria de sucos.

The small number of improved genotypes of passion fruit contributes to the low productivity of this crop in Brazil. New genetic materials should be developed to increase yield and fruit quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the yield and the qualitative characteristics of 36 passion fruit hybrids grown in northern Paraná. The evaluations were carried out during two production cycles, from April to June 2007 and from January to July 2008, by weekly harvests of ripe fruits. The yield was determined by total yield and number of fruits per plant. For the fruit quality the following characteristics were evaluated: weight, length, diameter and relationship between length and diameter of the fruits, skin thickness, pulp yield, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA) and ratio TSS/TA. Hybrid '36' presented fruits with desirable characteristics for the fresh market, while the hybrids '43' e '60' showed important features for the juice industry. Fruit yield, in kilograms of fruit per plant, stood between 20 and 40 in the first cycle and 54 to 96 in the second, which represents a yield of 30 to 53 ton ha-1 for the two crop seasons together.

O programa de melhoramento de plantas no IAPAR iniciou-se em 1972, logo após sua fundação, e tem como objetivo principal o desenvolvimento de cultivares superiores, com alto potencial de rendimento, resistência genética aos principais fatores bióticos e abióticos adversos e boa qualidade nutricional e tecnológica. Ao longo desses quarenta anos o IAPAR tem disponibilizado para os agricultores 184 cultivares de diferentes espécies, resultando em aumento de produtividade, maior disponibilidade de alimentos, redução dos impactos ambientais, agregação de valor para as propriedades agrícolas e melhoria de vida dos agricultores e consumidores. A instituição cumpre assim com sua missão de gerar tecnologia contribuindo para o desenvolvimento da agropecuária paranaense e nacional, uma vez que muitas das cultivares desenvolvidas são utilizadas em diferentes regiões produtoras do país.

The plant breeding program at IAPAR started in 1972, soon after its foundation, and has as main objective the development of superior cultivars with high yield potential, genetic resistance to major biotic and abiotic adverse factors and good nutritional and technological quality. Over these forty years, IAPAR has made available to farmers 184 cultivars of different species, resulting in an increase in the productivity, greater availability of food, decrease in environmental impacts, addition of value to agricultural properties and life improvement of farmers and consumers. Thus, the institution fulfills its mission of generating technology, contributing to the development of agriculture in Paraná and in other parts of Brazil, since many of the cultivars developed are used in different regions of the country.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar fontes de resistência genética a H. hampei em diferentes espécies de café do banco de germoplasma do Instituto Agronômico do Paraná (IAPAR), Londrina, PR. Foram realizadas avaliações preliminares de campo, para posterior testes de confinamento e de livre escolha, em laboratório, instalados em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com três repetições. Os genótipos foram avaliados quinze dias após a infestação com uma broca por fruto em placas de petri. Os dados foram analisados pelo teste de médias Scott-Knott a 1 % e pelo teste de χ2. Foi observado que C. eugenioides, C. kapakata e P. bengalensis constituem importantes fontes de resistência à broca, pois apresentaram menor freqüência de grãos brocados. Os dois primeiros podem apresentar substâncias voláteis antagônicas à broca na casca e a resistência de P. bengalensis pode estar também no grão.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the coffee germplasm of the Paraná Agronomic Institute (IAPAR) for resistance to the coffee-berry-borer. Preliminary field evaluation was performed in August 2004 and the fruits of less damaged genotypes in the field were evaluated under controlled condition with obligated and free choice experiments established in a randomized complete design with three replications. The genotypes were evaluated fifteen days after infestation with one borer per fruit in Petri dishes. The data were analyzed by the Scott-Knott means test at 1 % and by the χ2 test. Statistical analysis indicated that Coffea kapakata, Psilanthus bengalensis, C. eugenioides and genotypes with C. eugenioides genes were resistant. These genotypes presented low frequency of bored grains. C. eugenioides and C. kapakata could present resistance at epicarp level but not in the grain. P. bengalensis could present resistance also in the grains.

As cultivares de café IPR 99 ("Sarchimor") e IPR 107 ('IAPAR 59' x 'Mundo Novo IAC 376-4') eram no passado resistentes à ferrugem (Hemileia vastatrix). Os objetivos deste estudo foram: a) Identificar progênies dessas duas cultivares com resistência à ferrugem; b) Identificar progênies com resistência incompleta; c) Verificar a eficiência dos cruzamentos testes na seleção dessas cultivares. A avaliação da resistência em campo foi realizada em cafeeiros adultos expostos à população local de raças presentes no IAPAR. Foram avaliados 23 cruzamentos testes com progênies F3 de 'IPR 107' e 5 com progênies F4 de 'IPR 99'. Além disso, foram avaliadas 11 progênies F4 de 'IPR 107' e 5 progênies F5 de 'IPR 99', provenientes de autofecundação. Várias progênies das cultivares IPR 99 e 107 apresentaram alta freqüência de plantas com resistência completa e são portadoras de mais genes de resistência não quebrados pelas raças de ferrugem. Progênies das cultivares IPR 99 e IPR 107 com a resistência quebrada apresentaram resistência incompleta à população local de raças. Cruzamentos testes foram eficientes na seleção de progênies de café com mais genes de resistência não quebrados.

All plants of the coffee cultivars IPR 99 ("Sarchimor") and IPR 107 ('IAPAR 59' x 'Mundo Novo IAC 376-4') were resistant to rust (Hemileia vastatrix) in the past. Currently, susceptible plants were observed in the two cultivars due to the breakdown of resistance by new rust races. The aims of this study were: a) to identify coffee (Coffea arabica L.) progenies of the two cultivars with resistance to rust; b) to identify progenies with incomplete resistance; c) to investigate the efficiency of test-crosses for selection from these cultivars. Evaluation for field resistance was carried out in adult plants subjected to natural infection by the local leaf rust population at IAPAR. Twenty-three test-crosses with F3 progenies of 'IPR 107' and five with F4 progenies of 'IPR 99' were evaluated. Moreover, 11 F4 progenies of 'IPR 107' and five F5 progenies of 'IPR 99' derived from self pollinations were evaluated. Several progenies of the IPR 99 and 107 cultivars presented high frequency of resistant plants and thus should carry additional S H genes not defeated by specific rust races found at IAPAR. However, susceptible progenies of 'IPR 99' and 'IPR 107' presented incomplete resistance to the local race population. Test-crosses were efficient for selecting coffee progenies more resistant to rust.
